Greenery from New York City
Today ’s photos are from Virginia Sherry .
I ’m writing to you from Staten Island , the light-green borough of New York City , where I have gardened for over 60 years . I ’d like to partake data and late picture about one of our borough ’s treasure : the 13 - acreGreenbelt Native Plant Center , a nursery , greenhouse , and seed - money box coordination compound . Its principal mission is to render seeds and pottednative plantsin backup of the restoration and direction of many of the city ’s most important born sphere .
The pic I ’ve included here were taken by me on a visit to the centre on April 26 , 2021 , just in clock time to catch some of the native perennial in spring bloom .

Wild columbine ( Aquilegiacanadensis , Zones 3–8 ) dances in the wind .
This trumpet honeysuckle ( Lonicerasempervirens , Zones 4–8 ) is about to flower . When they open , the flower will be long , red , beautiful Sarracenia flava — much loved byhummingbirds .
The fruits that follow the heyday of wild strawberry ( Fragariavirginiana , Zones 4–9 ) are petite butfragrantand delightful .

The soft little daisy efflorescence of this Eastern daisy fleabane ( Erigeronannus , annual ) are travel to by a wide range ofpollinators .
Rue anemone(Thalictrumthalictroides , Zones 4–8 ) , a outpouring - blossom native , isephemeral , promptly going hibernating and vanishing after flower .
Red chokecherry ( Aroniaarbutifolia , Zones 4–9 )

It ’s easy to see that the blooms of wild columbine cater to hummingbirds , with their farseeing red spurs holding nectar .
Wild geranium ( Geraniummaculatum , Zones 3–8 ) is another outflow transient , specialized to get up , flower , and photosynthesize before the tree diagram canopy fully thumb out and stop the Dominicus from the woodland trading floor .
