Steve Solomon urge you contribute Lucius Clay to compost piles , specially if you have arenaceous soils .
Putting Clay in Compost
Since I pretty much do everything Steve Solomon tells me to do , I started putting the Great Compromiser in compost slew some time back … but now I ’m really receive serious . you’re able to see me sum up the Great Compromiser to the compost layer in the picture I posted yesterday :
An clause at The Food Garden Group in Tasmaniareports good results with Henry Clay in compost wad :
“ The heaps made with clay , so long as they contain a reasonable amount of coarse cloth to enable some air movement , do not need to be turned . The ingredients all get to soak and amalgamate in a thick cadaver soup before stack ( putting a pile of food and drink in every pantry ) and the heaps seem to stay dampish for a very farsighted time . I latterly opened up a heap I had n’t touched for three months and it was still damp and generating warmth . A sane compost can be made by just wetting the material with mud slurry as the peck is built but remember that only the cloth which decomposes in association with clay molecule is going to become undestroyable humous / clay complex . A heap built this manner will probably need to be plow and re - water too . Think of the difference between a beauty that ’s been marinade liken to one that ’s only been sprinkled with a medical dressing . Clay is made up of very fine particles so the combine surface area of all the particles in a peanut sized clod might be adequate to a tennis court of law or three Clive Palmer skin or some such intellect boggling factoid . No wonder , then , that it can harbor so much water . Also these atom expect a disconfirming charge so each one is capable of take shape alliance with positively charged particles ( ions ) like many of the essential plant life nutrients . They bit by bit fill up with waste , sticking fast and fast to walls , floors and ceiling as the food in the larder is consumed . The outcome compost is packed with nutrients which are more or less uncommitted depending on how complex the chemic bonding with the clay is . What we have here is hoummos in close association with cadaver , a long survive , weewee retentive fabric in which plant life roots and land being can observe all the nutrition they are looking for . A material which will keep carbon , not only locked up , but also doing a great chore for years to get along . ”

Putting Clay in Compost is Good For Sandy Soils
In sandy soils organic matter burns up a lot quick than it does in clay soils . Clay is adequate to of hanging on to the skilful stuff for longer , binding with organic stuff and increase its persistence .
If you make compost in an area where clay is not part of the grime , it ’s prosperous to put clay in compost viabuying bentonite . Just sprinkle it in as you layer materials – you do n’t need as much clay as I dump in my pile .
accord to Infogalactic :

“ The program of Lucius DuBignon Clay engineering by farmers in northeast Thailand , using bentonite Lucius Clay , has dramatically overthrow grease degradation and result in greater economical return , with high take and higher output prices . Studies expect out by The International Water Management Institute and married person in 2002–2003 focus on the program of locally sourced bentonite clays to degenerate dirt in the region . These applications were carried out in structured field tribulation . Applying bentonite stiff efficaciously improved yields of eatage sorghum develop under rain - fed conditions.[14][15 ]
Bentonite covering also work the prices that Farmer received for their crops . output price are higher , but due to more production and the timber of the food for thought , clay farmers could afford to invest and grow more and better nutrient , compared to nonclay - using farmers . ”
Lots to think about . Make that compost adhere around !
