Wednesday Vignette. My Latest Extravagance.
Calycanthus x raulstonii‘Hartlage Wine ’
This is a newfangled and exceedingly rare hybrid betweenCalycanthus floridusand the beautiful ChineseSinocalycanthus . I used to growCalycanthus occidentalisand the flower were small and a rather disappointing rusty Bolshevik . I foundSinocalycanthuswas stunning , but a bit tricky . I hope this will be less moody . These blossom are large and bloodline - red and sumptuous . It looks a little bit like a carmine Magnolia . They are think to be lightly scented , but they smell out of pepper to me .
This plant grows into a intermediate - sized bush . It postulate that well - make love oxymoronic kind of soil they call : ‘ moist , but well drained’ . It must be fertile and hommos - deep . It is said to be hardy in a sheltered side .

in reality , it was n’t so much of an extravagance . The baby’s room where I bought it only had one . They did n’t know what it was , or how much it be . In the end they let me have it for a very modest sum . I find I should go back and propose them more money .
Who would n’t bust heart-to-heart their piggy bank for this smasher ?

I have the North American native species here , but mine has never flowered . It keeps have adult every yr , though , so maybe soon . Those flowers are dramatic . It does front very much like a red Magnolia .
I fell in love with this when I saw it a few years ago . The miserable thing is still ride in a nursery pot but doing very well and blooming . They ’re very pop here and I ’ve find out them in quite a few gardens of people who like strange plant life . Sinocalycanthus seems much more of a rarity here and I feel lucky that , despite my ignorance and neglect , mine has grown very well for about nine years now and needs to be prune .
A beautiful flora , not one that grow in my region , so I enjoyed seeing yours .

What a lucky find ! I ’ve long admired the genus . There is a westerly species ( C. occidentalis ) but I rarely see it in garden centers and its water demand make it a piteous choice at present . I take care it up in my western garden templet , though , and was amused to happen the fragrance describe as “ the fragrance of an old wine gun barrel ” !
Now that ’s a beauty which was most well tell apart by your eagle eyes . I came across a snippet about it recently in ‘ The Garden ’ and was struck by the colour of the flower in the accompanying photo .
