I ’ve saved seeds from some of my pet heirloom or open - pollinated ( OP ) vegetables especially during covid-19 . But I like now that I had carry through more . Next yr we might have another seed shortage as we ’ve had in 2020 . When I went online this week to one of the major seed ship’s company , I already saw ‘ out of parentage ’ on some variety . Is it because the seed company just have n’t gotten the seed in stock or they had some crop loser or maybe their farmers could n’t get enough help to save seeds due to CV ? Are they are coming out of late ? Who knows . No matter , as I find it alarming that seed companionship who would commonly have their unexampled seeds by now are ‘ out of gunstock ’ on some seed - not all , but some .

Now that the season is over , and I ’ve clean out my garden and the last Lycopersicon esculentum are kick the bucket ( I did save some tomato plant seeded player ) , I thought are there any more vegetable I still have from the garden where I can still save some of the seed so of late ?

The result for me was yes . I found someJimmy Nardellopeppers that I grew that were stuck in the back of the icebox . My come stock did n’t germinate last year as it was too erstwhile . The glasshouse were sell out too . I was lucky that a ally had some duplicate and gave me some . So , in case I could n’t buy seed for next year , I took a couple of those Jimmy capsicum pepper plant , reduce them candid , and saved the ejaculate . capsicum pepper plant seeds are soft to pull through . You just have to take the germ out and dry them for a few workweek on a report towel or wax paper till they are really wry - you do n’t have to do anything special to save them except keep them from fluff forth . Then store in plastic baggie , envelope or some other container .

Beans are another well-situated crop to save . I ’ve saved both green and wry bean plant varieties . What ’s the difference when redeem those two ? Nothing ! I still have to look til they dry out in the seedcase before taking the seeds . I have someDi Casalbuono Panzariedddry beans that I crush ( see picture above ) and now they are in glass jars , just expect to go into that Instapot this winter .

I also have oneWaltham butternutwinter squash leave . I can save the seeds from it once I cut into it . They are a piffling more messy as you have to murder the stringy stuff and the germ are a bit slimy but I will lave the seeded player slime off and then allow them dry out on wax paper before store .

So besides saving seeded player from some vegetables you grew ( that you liked ) , I feel it ’s important for us to bring through seeds for succeeding growers and to continue vegetable varieties . Who knows , perchance you ’ll come across a new variation of a change . If the world ran out of germ , we ’d all get hungry middling quick .

I also noticed that the monetary value of many seeds seem to be higher this year in the seed catalogues which is another good grounds to keep open your own seeds .

think back to only save heirloom or open - polinated vegetables as crossbreed will not grow out true to the same variety . Could you grow a intercrossed seeded player ? Of naturally , but you just would n’t know what it might turn out to be .

I know it might be too recent for many of you this year but take up to think about lay aside seeds in the futurity . This CV , if nothing else , shows us we ca n’t take much for concede . Save come - keep money .
