I became a don last year in September to my son Oliver . The day he was hold was the happiest day of my life . While being a parent is challenging from time to time , it does enrich your spirit tremendously and I would not commute it for the world . What parenting also does for you is makes you pick out your priorities . It travel without saying that your child becomes the number one priority in your life . Everything else ( your pursuit , your retiring clock time activity , even gardening ) becomes of secondary nature .
Nonetheless , I did not give up on food growing this time of year . In fact , I have spent every spare minute I have had on it . And although I have foreshorten corners in the garden whenever and wherever I could , I still have not had enough meter to complete all the things I wanted to at the commencement of the season …
I did manage to empty the compost bin and move it ’s substance to the parcelling where we produce most of our food though . This season , however , I did not spread out it throughout the total allocation like I did in the past . Instead , I dumped it to the middle of the allotment with the intention of spreading it out throughout the two garden bed that I reserved for growing squash . The squash honey compost and I wanted to give it to them abundantly ( and hopefuly get tidy sum of fruits in return ) . However , due to lack of time I have n’t been able-bodied to implement my programme . As I am writing this , the compost is still laying there wait for me to put it to use .

If one hebdomad ago you asked me how I sense about the fact that the compost is still on the nose where I floor it in the middle of April , my reply would be that I am frustrated about it . But today , I am actually glad that I provide it there untouched !
Why is that so ?
Well , in two months , while the compost was just laying there untouched , the last yr ’s tomato and squash seminal fluid in it sprouted and produced seedling that I can now use !

If I had more sentence , I would probably discard these self - raised vegetable seedlings because I would have plenty of my own usable . But as I highlighted before , this time of year is different and I could not do all the things I wanted to . Plus , not to bring up the weather condition this spring . It was black . The airwave temperature were low and it rain down almost every twenty-four hours . As a consequence , I was not able-bodied to jump as many seed as I planned to . What ’s worse , lots of those seeds that I did manage to start , died off due to damp - off …
So , now I do n’t have enough vegetable seedling to sate the garden bed in the allotment in the way I go under out to do it before the season started . Every free veg seedling , especially the warm - season one , is thus highly appreciated .
How did those tomato plant and squeeze seeds get in the compost pile ?
Last spring I had my first serious attempt at household vegetable seed - starting and seedling - bringing up . Most of the seeds I start would sprout and eventually develop into a transplant - ready seedling . Some of the seeds , however , did not and I was go away with lots of plantless and soil - fill throne . Since the potting - soil I used for my seminal fluid - starting task was constituent , I blithely coldcock it straight into the compost pile …
I judge that the compost pile over the wintertime somehow stimulate antecedently - dormant seeds and helped them get ready for the germination . The seeds sprouted once the weather condition warmed up and develop into strong , sizeable and locally - raise seedlings .
What am I drop dead to do with these self - raised seedlings ?
I will not advert the squash seedling at all . They will stay incisively where they are . There ’s plenty of compost uncommitted and they should feel serious there . I will transplant the tomatoes though . They are go to a nearby garden seam where I installed a rainwater protection for them . I am confident that we ’re go to get loads of harvest from these self - raised veggie seedling . Wish us luck !
Update : I am happy to report that these ego - seeded squash plants ended up farm the good harvest time ever ! You canread all about it in my follow - up blog post …
