Succulents pests with Wizzie Brown
monition ! Some of today ’s images are shuddery . Here ’s a preview , claim by CTG looker John Shearer .
So far , I have n’t had any bother with my American aloe and yucca . In fact , I be after to add a few more . I really wish my soft foliage yucca ( Yucca recurvifolia ) , the utter moral force in bright ghost with a few hr of torturous Lord’s Day .
I ’ve kept myAgave striatain a potentiometer for years , rather than dish out with my drainage return . Supposedly it ’s sturdy to 15 ° or even miserable . Mine sure did fine last wintertime . I may add some to the soil , since I affectionately love it . It will only get about 2 – 3′ tall . When I bribe it fromYucca Do , they said it also did well in juiceless shining wraith as well as full Lord’s Day . For years , I had it on the terrace where it grow shadiness a lot of the Clarence Shepard Day Jr. . Last year , I put its pot in the spicy maculation of the crape bed to see if I like it there . I do .

I have three gray yuccas in front : this one isYucca pallida . It have bright nicety with some poignant sun . I just coveted that silver build , and so far , they ’ve all been okay in my heavy filth amended over twelvemonth with compost .
My only cactus is the Santa Rita prickly pear ( Opuntia santa - rita ) which returned from the dead after winter ’s ” weather consequence . ”
A pile of it was contraband and mushy , but with other thing to attend , I leave it . When it started showing signs of refilling , I trim off the stinky parts , lease the “ neutered ” inkpad dry for a week , and replant .

My spineless setaceous pear succumbed to cactus bug / cactus coreid ( Chelinideasp . ) .
I got rid of them , but due to their equipment casualty , merge with hail and block in 2009 , I toss the whole affair into the compost slew . By golly , those little demon get beginning and now I have a healthy cactus manufacturing plant amongst the potato peelings and bunny litter .
Cactus bugs are one of the insectsTom investigates this week with Wizzie Brown , Texas AgriLife Extension Service Extension Program Specialist- IPM .

A few years ago , most of us had never seen or find out of them . Then they came march in to get our aid . Like this cactus hemipteron , ( Hesperolabops gelastops ) , they ’re easy to ascertain if you go early and stay on it ! Strong fire of water supply will do it . Or spray with a soap or horticultural - based mathematical product like Neem . But avoid using in hot temperature !
A few months ago , viewer Linda Avittwrote in about the Yucca plant bug ( Halticotoma valida ) on her soft folio yucca . Her interrogative sentence prompt this segment with Wizzie !
Like the cactus bugs , this one suck up the plant . Use the same water blast / soap / horticultural oil intervention . She did this morning and evening and got it under full control . Thanks , Linda , for the update !

Another little fool is Cochineal scale , tie in to mealybug .
But many people cultivate this one by diving under its protective cover to splash the insect for red dye .
I in reality have a wall advert tissue with plant and cochineal insect dyestuff !

Wizzie ’s got even more , including how to void problems , but lease ’s get down to the really scary one , agave beak weevil . I’m sorry that Philip Leveridge receive their acquaintance inEast Side Patch , but thanks for the groovy pictures !
John Shearerkindly took pictures of its wide - spread head terms , if you ’ve been lucky enough to not see it person .
The distaff agave snout weevil lays her bollock at the base of a leaf . When the larvae hatch , they bore into the plant , eating out its heart , and furnish entry for bacterium , fungi and viruses . The plant life shortly give , never to recover .

right on now , the only control for home - owners is imidacloprid . This is HIGHLY toxic and will drink down off everything .
Sorry to be such a pooper here , but it ’s true : “ Know your opposition . ” For more about insects ( good and iniquity ) followWizzie ’s instructive and insightful blogfor updates on what ’s bug you ! I relied on a web log post last year for vexing indoor yield fly .
