Douglas Flory and David Lloyd ’s prop in PA offer a look out front to what ’s just around the corner !
" Here are a few photos from Spring 2016 at Acorn Hill , our home in Rosslyn Farms , just alfresco of Pittsburgh , PA . Our 75 year sure-enough house posture in the shade of a expectant chincapin oak tree which you may see in the first two picture , hence the name Acorn Hill and the giant acorn sculpture in photo # 7 . ( The other large Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree you’re able to see in the first photo is a thriving American Elm , one of the few left in our part of the commonwealth . )
We use the infinite above an old stone paries for daffodils and day lily , which you may see in the next twosome of photos . Over the years , we ’ve notice we have good fortune with the tried - and - dependable varieties , like Mount Hood and King Alfred ; a lot of the newfangled , more alien - search narcissus varieties do n’t naturalise as well for us , and some peter out after a few years , much like tulip .

We also have two beds of wild tulips , ( Tulipa turkestanica ) . Unlike tulip breed in Holland , these are much shorter , naturalize rapidly , and are not bothered by deer , cony , or squirrels . They are not as showy as Dutch tulip but blossom much earlier , so are a welcome sight in our garden . The last photo ( come out first ) is one of our Yoshino cerise trees with an acorn bird theatre , made by the same local creative person , Jack Mayer , who created our large ( about 4 ' high x 6 ' long ) acorn .
I go for you enjoy these glimpse of spring time , specially you northern gardener who still have weeks of Old Man Winter ahead of you ! "
