Hello GPOD ! My name is Kelly Hansen , and I live in Delmar , New York , decent outside of Albany , which is in Zone 5b .
I start “ implant ” in our yard 25 years ago knowing absolutely nothing about plant and gardening . YouTube had n’t been invented , and I literally did not even do it how to correctlywater a plant .
tight - forward to today . I can confidently say that I have “ garden . ” My yard was featured on our community garden nine tour , I am near completion of classes toward a gardening certificate through theNew York Botanical Garden(NYBG ) , and in 2022 I started a garden design business , New Leaf Garden Design LLC .

The purpose of my story is to serve as both a word of advice and an inhalation to new gardeners : a warning to pull through your money on the front end and to take the meter to read about gardening before you startshopping , and an divine guidance to stick by with it and bask having your hands in the dirt and seeing that first green leaf break in thespring .
We often see gardens from a distance . The absolutely planned trend and brainy soda water of colour earmark us to absorb the total garden through a widescreen crystalline lens .
I also love to zoom in as close as possible to see the tiniest parts of the bloom , the colour of the foliage veining , and the symmetry of the foliage margin . Inevitably , I back off , completely awe - inspired , and think to myself , “ How coolheaded is that ? ”

Every year , I say I desire to move theEuonymusfortunei(Zones 5–9 ) shrubs out of this bed . That idea evaporates when thebutterfly weed(Asclepius tuberosa , Zones 5–9 ) flower next to the creamy yellow euonymus , and the color combination is dazzling .

The dour lacy foliage of the ‘ Black Lace ’ elderberry(Sambucusnigra‘Black Lace ’ , Zones 5–8 ) in this exposure fades into the backcloth .

The close - up highlights the delicacy of the elderberry bloom .
These photos were take at 6:30 pm , and the sunlight creates the tail on the red oak barque and lets the simple-minded green - and - blank color pallet of the astilbe(Astilbe× arenseii , zone 3–8),hosta(Hostahybrid , Zones 3–9 ) , and red oak(Quercus rubra , Zones 3–8 ) bark really shine through .
