Place sweet-smelling plants where you can enjoy them throughout the growing season

As a minor , I was fascinated by the intoxicating scent of my mother ’s peony , which I would beak by the armloads to fill up every vase in the house . I had forgotten the joy that fresh scents can bring until geezerhood by and by when I was visiting a garden shopping center and smelled something delicious . I follow my nose to the very back of the greenhouse . There , standing no taller than my shank was a Koreanspice viburnum ( Viburnum carlesii , USDA Hardiness Zones 5 to 8) that was soon to become the newest flora in my garden .

After that encounter , I start on a mission to incorporate fragrance into every area of my garden , especially the bed around the deck of cards and near the windows , where I can bewitch the scents on the breeze while I ’m relaxing out of doors or while I ’m inside doing the dishes . The plant I ’ve used in the design of my fragrant beds postulate no special treatment in my garden , and all are stout to at least Zone 5 .

The potency of flower odour varies greatly , so I consider the strength of a fragrance when resolve where to put a plant . I set plants with subtle fragrances unaired to the house , but powerfully perfumed ones usually line up homes farther off . For example , I plant sweet peas nearby , but I plant the heavily perfumed‘Star Gazer ’ lilyin a more distant bed so I get only a puff of its scent on a picnic .

Just as I rate plants base on the potency of their aroma , I ’m also heedful when constitute more than one fragrant plant in the same expanse . Although many roses and shrub have such soft perfume that they can mingle , I take to stray on the side of caution and constitute different fragrances in disjoined area . For example , I planted my lilacs and peonies on paired sides of the theater . At the same clock time , I seek to stagger efflorescence times so that each scent can be savored separately , and fragrance can be diffuse throughout the season . My viburnum blooms well before my mock orange , which blossom before the lilies . By pay attending to bloom time , I keep these strong bouquet from collide .

It is also smart to take reward of the prevailing wind pattern when localize works . I am fortunate to have wind flow from front to back and crosswise on my attribute , so I relish fragrances no matter where I plant . But if the lead blow principally from one direction I would set upwind in a spot where the scents would blow to me on the piece of cake .

It also enamor me later in the time of year with ruddy fall foliage and berries . The fragrance of this and other viburnums can be secure , but since I like it , I do n’t heed it even in close quarters .

By late spring , the lilac ( Syringa vulgariscvs . , Zones 4 to 8) , one of my favored fragrant plants , are flower in several spot in my garden . These shrubs are fearless , disease - resistive , and drought - tolerant once institute . When they are in efflorescence , I halt to inhale profoundly whenever I catch their arrant scent . Shortly after the lilacs fade , the paeony ( Paeoniaspp . and cvs . , Zones 3 to 8) start to bloom . I use peonies in just about every bed of my garden because they amount in so many colour and in scents that order from delicate to operose . The bloom last almost a hebdomad , and when the show is over , the foliage stays lush and attractive until late fall . The only maintenance they require is staking .

Roses are the anchor of my garden , and I find that their nicety of fragrancy are compatible , so I ’ll often plant a shrub rose near a climber and delight double the flowers and fragrance . I prefer antique roses that are hardy , fragrant , and disease - resistive . A few of my deary are ‘ Don Juan ’ ( zone 5 to 9 ) , a climber with a rich - crimson repeating bloom that has a Greco-Roman rosebush scent ; ‘ Louise Odier ’ ( Zones 5 to 9 ) , a soft - lilac Bourbon rose with a rich perfumy scent ; and ‘ Comte de Chambord ’ ( Zones 5 to 9 ) , a shrub rise up with pink fruity - smack flowers .

I always look forrard to the sweet aroma of the butterfly stroke bushes ( Buddleiaspp . and cvs . , Zones 5 to 9 ) , which add up in a range of wonderful color and do attract butterflies . in the end , the heady , musky - scented oriental lily ( Liliumcvs . , Zones 4 to 8) are the last fragrant plants to flower in my garden , making a glary show in August and September . I have a broad stove of colors and sizes , and they all have an intense scent . My   favorite is the stunning white‘Casa Blanca ’ . I have lily planted along my walkways and next to my pack of cards , but I take special care not to place dissimilar cultivars near each other because their sweetness often do n’t mix well .
