It was implausibly hard to narrow down all my preferent hidden gems to just one pick for the summertime , since the Golden State is such a immense destination in itself . So , I bow a list of 10 favorites from NorCal to SoCal , and lease Country Living surprise me with their natural selection .

Whoa Nellie Deliis more commonly known as the Mobil Station in Lee Vining . ( I briefly mentioned it in myYosemite postfrom last summer . ) It ’s part gas station , part talent shop , and part eating place , built and owned by the same class for the last few decennary . I ’ve been frequenting the Mobil every year for the last 6 yr , and my fiancé has been going since he was a kid over 30 years ago .
Yosemite visitors who embark or leave via Tioga Pass have all seen the Mobil , but a destiny of them probably do n’t know that the eating place inside , Whoa Nellie , serves up some of the fine food in the Eastern Sierra . It ’s all a moment incognito as you walk into the modest building and see the kitchen stave bringing up order of magnitude cafeteria - style .
But when you take a close face at the card , it’sWhoa ! Nellie!You see things like chicken jambalaya , godforsaken buffalo meat loaf , fish tacos , lobster taquitos , and cowhand steak ( all of which I ’ve tried and completely commend ) , plus a outstanding selection of craft beer . As the Garden Betty , I tend to label eating establishments by the quality of their salads , and Whoa Nellie ’s garden salad ( which is big enough to be an entree ) is not just a jumbal of iceberg lettuce and shredded cultivated carrot , but a fresh premix of dark , leafy greens , gong peppers , and broccolini . I approve ! It ’s like a nutrient haven in the middle of the high desert .
After you snap up your goodly meal ( all the portions here are huge ! ) and a local brew ( Mammoth Brewing Company ’s Ahwahnee Amber Ale is one of my favorites ) , head to the outdoor patio , which overlooks the impressive Mono Lake . I ’ve spent many a summer afternoon at the Mobil grubbing , crapulence , and camping bus - watching after a getaway in Yosemite . ( Anyone else into camper - watching ? Lee Vining is the blank space to do it . A steady stream of Sportsmobiles , Airstreams , Westys , vintage teardrop and other fun - Mobile pealing through here , while I watch over with envy and build my dreaming recreational vehicle in my oral sex . )
