We ’ve just lionize the solstice and midsummer is officially date on June 24 – so now we are definitely lead into the summertime garden season . The garden is abuzz – full of pollinators – plant life to glean and all sorts of endearing veggies coming on . Oh and the weeds … the never - ending garden chore … Here ’s what is happening in my zone 7 garden …
Too regretful , I have real job like writing and take in photos – it forces me to be inside at the desk – and not being outside in the garden . Right now if you stand still long enough in the garden , you’re able to well-nigh see things grow before your very eyes . Daily review is necessary for still maintain some sort of order .

The cool - weather crops are nearly finish . Golly we had one of the best salad seasons ever . gelt that are bolting and salad greens that are bloom tend to become bitter , leggy and fall through over . So it is time to harvest them and eat the foliage that are still tasty and not bug - ridden or dark-brown ; all of the flush are edible too . Right now I have a container full of bright jaundiced Indian mustard efflorescence on the back porch and the pollinator are all over it . Clean up the salad bottom to make way for those plant that are suffering in marketpacks ( if you are like me ) , or sow some more seed for late summer crop .
The cabbageworms have invaded the brassicas – all over the broccoli , collards and kale . commonly when I see the endearing little moolah butterfly fluttering about , I spread over the brassicas with float row cover to forbid them from laying eggs , which really does work if you do it . This year I was in use and neglected this simple task and so now the dark-green caterpillars are champ the cole crop . So yesterday , I harvested all of the farewell , as well as the anthesis mustards and screen out through the farewell . I put the reject on the compost pile and bring a huge roll into the kitchen , whereupon I filled the stadium with water system , adding both salt and vinegar , to take out the insect . While one can spend time look for these camouflaged insect – you may never get them all – and give thanks you very much , this vegetarian does n’t want to eat them . They fall to the bottom of the bowl after intoxicate . Had a marvellous wilted greens and tempeh dish which I will stake soon .
I ’m harvest herbaceous plant flowers of cilantro , calendula , dill , Eruca vesicaria sativa , Melissa officinalis and more to eat and adorn the house . They can be used on any dish that you might use the herbaceous plant leafage on and they make great herb butter and vinegars . I have vas of these incredible comestible on the board and counters , which are pleasant to reckon at and make grabbing a few for the plate more probable .

A few of the garlics have just started to turn yellow-bellied / brown which argue the harvest will begin soon . Once about 40 to 50 percent of the plants start to commute color or flop over is time to dig the bulbs . Here is a radio link to garlic harvesting and curing by Ruth Dobsevage./item/3247 / harvesting - garlic
Basils are ready to be issue back . recollect to cut them all the path back just above the first two lot of leaves so you get maximum harvest throughout the season./item/3668 / video - how - to - harvest home - annual - herbs
pepper , stringbeans , cucumber , squelch and tomatoes are just blossom and set out to give rise fruit . We ’ve eaten our first babe squash and picked the first chilli , however I am anxiously awaiting the taste of that first homegrown tomato .

Enjoy the fruits of your labor – happy summertime !
