There ’s always a mint going on in spring . Not only is it a meddling fourth dimension in the garden , but it ’s also the start of whitewater season , a great window for local surf ( before the northwest clotheshorse stop rolling through ) , and a beautiful clip of yr for route trips up north ( for snowboarding , hiking , climbing , bivouacking , mountain biking … and whatever other gear mechanism we can fit out on our cap ) . All this basically mean we have n’t see our bungalow since January .

I was feening for a Baja mending . And our service department was starting to look like anAmerican Pickersdream : mismatch chair stacked to the ceiling , side tables scored from curbsides , vintage odds and end collect from blank space we could n’t remember . That pile of “ clobber , ” as Mike Wolfe would say , was destined for the Boat Ranch and we had to get it out before we ended up onHoarderstoo .

We adjudicate to make a stumble south for my birthday , and were fired up to find we were the only ones at the Ranch that weekend .

The Boat Ranch

Ahh , abode sweet home .

Offshore winds all solar day long and shoulder joint - high waves with no one on them . Except the two of us .

So , what ’s changed sincelast prison term ?

Offshore winds and shoulder-high waves

Well , I can tell you whathasn’tchanged … and that ’s this glorious view every time we throw launch the door to recognize the day .

But whatdidchange was the palapa you see , which we finally refurbished with fresh palm fronds .

I spent a good part of the afternoon doing a bit of “ K work ” around the Ranch , sawing off palm frond for our palapa and decorating the fence that separate our dimension from the one next doorway . Something about palms just pass water me feel at home .

Surfing by ourselves

outdoors , we added a few personal touches around the boat that make me smile every time I see them .

For the last few trip , we ’d been afraid to reach the garage next to our boat . The garage belong to to whoever live in our boat before us , but like the boat , it was abandoned years ago and became a collar - all for anything and everything that moved in and out of the Ranch . Generations of relic resided in that garage … some good , most bad .

Will spent the entire day glint under the dusty tarpaulin and pulling everything out from under the cobweb . It was at once fascinating and shuddery . To our amazement , we rule some absolutely working oil lamps … a band of charcoal Weber grills ( three of them ? ! ) … a field glass table … a bamboo vis-a-vis that just needed a good pair of cushions … and random composition of plywood and plank that we write for next projects .

View from the bungalow

After inspecting the Webers , we found them to be in decent shape and decided to keep the red one as our cooking grill . On the other two , we remove the leg and will be turning them into our blast pits — one for a small bonfire and one for our Dutch oven .

We find a beat-up longboard and windsurfing board that take care like bygones from the 80 , and used them to flank the end of our surfboard rack ( which needs just a few end touches on our next trip ) .

Inside the boat , our bedroom is beginning to look like a material sleeping room — affectionate and informal . Some of my best nights of sleep were spend in that bed … If it were n’t for the beach the right way outside the door , I ’d probably never get up . It ’s like being on vacation in your own home .

Fresh palm fronds on the palapa

Will progress some shelves beside the bed , and by the next couple of stumble , we ’ll have curtains run up , wood repainted , and pictures hung .

In the sitting elbow room , we impart a duo of carpeting ( is n’t it great how a rug can forthwith transform a blank ? ) and a new built work bench ( soon to be paint and fit out with cushion ) .

We also hung some shelves and hooks and cannotwaitto put things in their place . ( It ’s looking a fleck helter-skelter here while we figure out how to coordinate . )

Trimming palm fronds

So , progress is move along . We ’re loving every moment of turning this house ( er , sauceboat ? ) into a house . It ’s far from perfect but we adore everything about it , even the nuts and strip interior and the little leakage we ’ve yet to witness . We adore the comfortableness it brings and the promise of escapade every time we ’re here . I ’m excited to channelise back down next calendar month !
