A garden emphasizing foliage and color

Today we ’re visiting Lee Miller ’s garden .

receive to my late May – other June garden ! I am a Long Island , New York , native , having farm up , and still occupy , in the friendly town of Sayville located on the south shore . My love of horticulture recrudesce around the age of five as I first startedgrowing flowers from seed , a Passion of Christ that continued to develop . Today I am the author of three gardening books , and I spend most of my time in the gardens of node as a landscape painting designer and garden consultant . My love of horticulture lies deeply within me as I carry on to garden as both a hobby and as a life history .

The part of garden design I am most passionate about iscombining foliage and semblance . I must admit that while I am involved in some contour of horticulture throughout the year , the months of May and June are among my favorite time to be in my Zone 7a garden . By mid - May and into the beginning of June , raw foliage is go forth everywhere , and perennial are just waiting to collapse open their blooms , exposing an array of color . Come along with me to see what the garden has to offer !

One of my favorite combinations is in this aspect along our back patio . Itohpeony‘Bartzella ’ ( Zones 3–8 ) is in full bloom with its voluminous yellow flowers , along with Minuteman hosta ( Zones 3–9 ) , purple salvia ‘ May Night’(Salvia× sylvestris‘Mainacht ’ , Zones 4–9),Allium‘Mont Blanc ’ ( Zones 4–9 ) , andStachysbyzantina(lamb ’s pinna , Zones 4–8 ) with ‘ Blue Globe ’ spruce(Piceapungens‘Blue Globe ’ , Zones 3–7 ) . One of the attributes of this intercrossed paeony is that the stems are hardy enough that they do not ask staking . The works grow into a bush human body , achieve a height and width of 2 to 3 feet , with blooms that last for two to three hebdomad . Salvia ‘ May Night ’ produces a profusion of thick purple blooms that will last throughout most of the summertime with deadheading .

Another favorite in the May - June garden isAllium‘Globemaster ’ ( zone 5–8 ) . I constitute the bulbs among daylily ‘ Stella De Oro’(Hemerocallis‘Stella De Oro , Zones 3–10 ) so that the 4 - in - diameter lavender blooms of the allium come up up above the slender foliation of the daylily . Once the underlie leaves of the genus Allium protrude to fade , the daylilly fronds compensate it up , earmark for a full look . For an extra bonus , the daylilies bulge out to bloom while the allium is still at its prime of life , adding an teemingness of golden yellow blooms . From this special vista , you may also seeSpirea‘Limemound ’ ( zone 3–8 ) in the foreground with its newly formed lime foliage tipped with hues of pink , contribute another factor to this combination .

Here is another position of the same seam looking from the paired focussing . Weeping Japanese maple ‘ Red Select’(Acerpalmatum , Zones 5–9 ) can be seen in the left scope with theSpirea‘Limemound ’ appearing behindAllium‘Globemaster ’ and daylilies . To the right hand is part of theshade garden .

I call this expanse of the backyard my “ hole-and-corner garden , ” because to unwrap it , one needs to adopt around the bend to see what is in store . In addition to this hidden field , there is another garden on the southerly side of the prop .

The southerly secret garden . I incur walk to the back of the property to visit these two gardens to be very reposeful and remedial , and visitant enjoy it too .

As we come to the ending of our stroll , I hope you savor the tour of my Long Island Zone 7a garden . I have always had a love of horticulture , but I find safety in the garden now more than ever . A garden is an extension of its owner , a living firearm of graphics that constantly changes , and the lead creation can be enjoyed by all those who find it .
