Returning to this beautiful space for more
Today we ’re back in Sheldon , Iowa , chatter the beautiful garden Kathy Schreurs has produce with her husband around their 130 - year - quondam house .
When we reworked a side yard this past year , a down in the mouth pot showed up as an accidentalfocal point(although it ’s scantily seeable in this photo at the conclusion of our rainbow ofannuals ) . The white phlox in the foreground arePhlox‘Opening Act Pink - a - dit ’ ( Zones 4–8 ) . This was their first season , and I was mirthfully surprised when they were in full bloom already in lateJune , unlike my older phlox assortment . They had color all summer and nomildew . The bright green‘Sun King ’ aralia(Aralia cordata‘Sun King ’ , Zones 4–8 ) cash in one’s chips back to ground level every winter and then advertize up and out all summertime until it blooms in the early capitulation . It is one of the flora we were able to save when a tree diagram was remove from this area in the nightfall of 2021 . The river rock borderline that edges the path is what remains ( along with the larger shrub ) of the original garden we put in here in the late 90s . At that time , river rock and roll was our choice ofmulch : cheesy than bark , approachable , permanent . Over the years we realized it did n’t fit our horticulture style : I care to stratum industrial plant , and even with a heavy barrier underneath , weeds were a constant trouble . So in 2021 my fresh retired husband scraped and fag away a mates of tons and found a newfangled home for it . Some of it went into the trenches I asked him to dig along the new moulding .
We experience extremedroughtlast class , and oursoilshows the upshot ofwateringwith extremely toilsome water . Iowa is famous — although maybe you did n’t know — for its black soil , and the gray - brown colouring along the way of life is a well-defined indicator of the piddle crisis .

Because I love ‘ Sun King ’ so much , I ca n’t jib share a few pictures of it inSeptember . It really does glow .

This is our garden itinerary from the polar end . I ’ve gotten used to ignoring the service department across the street , but I see it commands a lot of attention in a picture .

Our bluepots — and Big Foot — spend the winter in our gardening shed . I ca n’t wait to take them out again !
Cool yellows ( andchartreuse ) coexist happily within my blue framework . TheTrollius‘Lemon ’ ( Zones 3–6 ) blooms beneath what will finally be the canopy of the aralia .
AnnualOsteospermum‘Double Moonglow ’ peak alongside the course where I enjoy them all summer .

And the Au plectranthus(Plectranthusoertendahlii‘Lime Light ’ , Zones 9–11 or as an annual ) is a good companion plant everywhere .
‘ Limelight’(Hydrangea paniculata‘Limelight ’ , Zones 3–8 ) is the sturdiest hydrangea in our molding . I ’m still deliberate the wisdom of allowing the native milkweed(Asclepiassyriaca , Zones 3–9 ) to grow along with it , butmonarchsinAugustare irresistible , and more and more rarified .
