Growing blackberries in Florida is n’t too hard … but raise most raspberries is another story . Today I ’m going to share how you may maturate both ; however , you ’re not go to be able to originate both in all part of the state , so I ’ll get over the climate aspect as well .
I receive an email recently on the topic of growing razz and blackberry in Florida and that triggered today ’s post . Let ’s just start with the doubtfulness .
Phil spell :

“ I subsist in Pasco County just north of Tampa and are in Zone 9 right hand at the bound of A and B , our soil is mostly sandlike with low levels of organic fertilizer . I populate on the land site of an old orange grove .
I would like to try my hand at some Raspberries and mayhap some Blackberries . I have see wild blackberries in the areas of our residential area that have been allowed to regress to rude , but they are little and somewhat acerbic .

mature Mysore raspberries
The nasty affair about Mysore raspberries is their incredible spikelet . These cane fruit are vicious and even bear spines on the leaves themselves .
I ’ve enjoyed growing Mysore raspberry bush ever since my friend Andi hallow me with a little baby one in a pot a few age ago . That has now grow into a fiend flora and carry multiple times . It ’s also steady down into the ground outside of its bed here and there . Wherever the canes get a fiddling buried , they ’ll start a young plant . I ’ve been able to share quite a few thanks to this habit .

Ripening Mysore raspberries
Besides Mysore , there ’s another raspberry call “ Dorman Red ” that ’s sometimes urge for Florida but it ’s very marginal . I only got one fruit from mine in three year , then it exit . razzing in general do n’t wish the heat here and I also believe the wintertime are n’t cold enough to stimulate them into decent product .
The final variety of raspberry you ’ll sometimes see in Florida is the Southern selection “ Caroline ” . This one produced more fruit for me than Dorman Red , but I only had them growing in pots in my ( now defunct ) industrial plant nursery . It need more testing to see if it ’ll be worth acquire here foresighted - terminal figure .
I consider both Dorman Red and Caroline appreciate some shade . Both are very inhuman - hardy . Mysore does n’t seem to heed the warmth , though it may freeze down during a inhuman snatch that reaches into the scurvy 20s .

One Final Option for Florida
I mostly relegated blackberry bush and raspberries to the novelty side of my gardening plan after discovering the incredible productivity of mulberries .
Mulberries taste like a seedless and utterly sweet blackberry
One mulberry tree will produce gallons of yield with less piece of work , less care and less water than any cane yield . They also produce for years , do n’t need weed or mulching , plus will bear in just a year or two after planting .

I suppose if you wanted to get really clever , you could grow a mulberry tree , then plant cane yield around it to conduct a multitude of Charles Edward Berry from the ground to the sky .
Good luck with your Charles Edward Berry growing plans – may you end up with flock of delicious fruit .
