This garden is a feast for the eyes—and for the birds and butterflies
Today we ’re visiting the garden of Deirdre Gallagher .
After establishment , this garden is designed to need very short water system . Although it is still quite youthful , it is pull many bird , bees , and worm . It provide me endless joy .
One of the many goals of a wildlife habitat is to provide food for birds and other critters by imbed species that insects will feed and lay eggs on . Milkweed provides nectar and a position for monarchs to pose their eggs . Look at the big seedpod . I believe this specimen is called “ big hairy ball . ” Clearly , this is not the scientific name ( editor ’s note : Gomphocarpus physocarpus , Zones 8–10 or as annual ) .

This is a fragrancy of flowers take from my garden in other October when the prime were scarce but the berry were seem .
I am favorable enough to have a stand of unfounded persimmon trees(Diospyros virginiana , Zones 4–9 ) in my yard . Here is the first harvest .
My thou is also certified as a monarch butterfly mode station . In recent tumble these prairie blaze stars(Liatris pycnostachya , Zones 3–9 ) appeal dozens of butterfly . In wildlife horticulture , we do n’t do a winter clean up ; all plant life materials , leaves , and seedpods are left for the wench and other wildlife for cover and food . We intentionally set berry- and fruit - put up Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and bush to flow our piffling creatures .

I live in St. Louis . About five years ago I purchased a midcentury theatre that was deal as a tear - down and did n’t get torn down . In add-on to redesign the house for senesce in place , I gutted the yard of incursive honeysuckle and wintertime tree creeper and begin to create a wildlife home ground with help from the St. Louis Audubon Society . Part of this task regard remove big sections of the lawn . This picture shows a large circle of lawn that was remove , with evergreen plant ( not aboriginal but for cover and avian shelter ) constitute on this mound and with totems made from Ellen Price Wood fished out of the Missouri River . This sets a nice tone when entering the prop .
This is rattlesnake master(Eryngium yuccifolium , Zones 3–8 ) . These seedpods will be welcome in the late fall .
This is the beautiful and petite aboriginal Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree Carolina buckthorn(Rhamnus caroliniana , Zones 5–9 ) . With its shining light-green leaf and breezy habit , it is a wonderful accession to the front curtilage .

This aboriginal ninebark shrub(Physocarpus opulifolius , Zones 2–8 ) is perfect in the back of the boundary line , with its arched subdivision and touchy flowers that last until late downslope .
