Fruits of our labors even if some took “almost” a century

I ’m always so glad when the Byzantine gladiolus flowers this time every year . But does n’t that face look a shade grumpy ?

Starting from just three or so strait - alongs corm , it multiplies every year , so it ’s actually very glad !

Still , she ’s a small out of sort since she come down with a case of powdery mildew thanks to cool nights and wet in the air .

She ’ll work it out herself without medication , but if you ’re worried about it on your works , chink out neem vegetable oil or Serenade . Just do n’t apply in the heat of solar day and do n’t use Serenade when the bees are active .

Up the street , anAgave americanais about out of time , though it wo n’t foreswear its title to that niche for a one C or more , thanks to its pups . And their pups . . .

Coincidentally , it sent up its net comment just as aCentral Texas Gardener Facebook questioncame in about century plants . So , this workweek , Daphne answer : does it actually take a century to blossom ? Nope .

Hella Wagnershared some pictures of her plant ’s glorious Ascension Day as the mother plant died . Daphne explains the cognitive operation , and how the bloom stalk itself can even be dangerous .

My yuccas up front ( Y. pallidaandY. reverchonii , ) are reach out for the sky , too , but they wo n’t terminate their sprightliness with this springtime bloom .

Mostly , they desire good drain , though myA. celsiidoes OK in my island bed that I ’ve gradually amended with compost and mulch .

Do look at their cold-blooded daring . I fell in passion with anA. celsii‘Tricolor ’ , as it was called then , which is rated for a zone or two just warmer than us . First crazy halt and they were cornmeal mush . My regularcelsiididn’t fare well in 17 degrees but did return , just slightly modify .

Do take a serious smell at their mature size , too . This cute littleA. americanawill farm up fast , and it wo n’t take even 10 years !
