First , if you view the placard in the Statesman last Saturday about the Windsor Park Garden Tour , there ’s a discipline on one address . The correct one is 6210 Brookside , rather than Brookshire . Get more info on CTG ’s calendar on this web log web site or on ourwebsite .

Now that the warmth is upon us , one of my daily chores is cleaning and filling the birdbath . It ’s deserving it for the nightly cardinal baths ( the lady always go first ) , with beverage and puddling from everyone throughout the day . I keep a dish scrubber in my “ poppycock ” bin ( a little galvanized container that was our first patio pond ) to make it easy . The rock is for dirt ball to perch , rather than drown .

The crape seam tub is a ceramic pot tray and flora stand from Greg one Christmas . But it ’s too short for safety from the computerized tomography ( the case with most “ cute ” birdbaths ) . The regal birdbath I look up to are expensive , and might flood out this space , so I set about some conduit that I cut and slipped over the legs to make the stand improbable . Then , I spray paint the Modern wooden leg with faux granite .

Actually , I demand to make it taller - I did n’t factor in how much need to go underground for stability . Next project !

The first toad arrived , one day later than last twelvemonth . In a few calendar week , I ’ll set out the “ toad tray ” with piddle , where they hang out and mate , until we devise another patio pool .

Really exciting to me is that the new rentals next door asked us with glee , “ Are those fireflies we ’re get a line ? ” Former urbanites , they ’d never experienced a firefly .

I rescued one from the house the other daylight . To make certain you recognize it in daylight as a pest warrior and your best booster , here ’s a depiction fromTexas A&M ’s site .

Online , you could see the insects fromA Field Guide to Common Texas Insects , by Bastiaan Drees and John Jackman , but I keep it handy on my bookshelf , too .

I did some weeding , and almost plucked out the cosmos seedling that I ’d forgotten I ’d spread in the distance reserved for the Gulf genus Penstemon this fall ! From a distance , I wondered , “ What are all those weeds ? ” Well duh . If your computer storage is dependable than mine , seeding annuals is a good trick to fill in a space that you have in reservation . It ’s not too late for thing like creation , sunflower , or zinnias from seed . Or do one-year transplants , while your perennials turn in . You ca n’t block where they are !

Here ’s a picture of another day lily with no name , and if you jazz what it is , I ’d sure enough like to have sex .

The pavonia ( rock grow ) also started flower this hebdomad . It ’s prone to powdery mildew when humidness is high . I ’ve been lax about get out the neem oil , but maybe this weekend I ’ll do it before the sun is up . But even when I do n’t treat it , they always bound back and bloom all summertime .

Here’sFreesia laxa , reblooming after its former spring performance amidst free fall - blooming garlic chives . This is a freesia thatScott Ogdenrecommends as one that naturalizes for us . I plan to get bunches this fall ! I mystify this one from Tom Peace , author of another must - have script : Sunbelt Gardening : succeeder in Hot - Weather Climates .

Remember that we archive the info , and with our new search engine , it ’s promiscuous to find what you want if you think of it months down the route . Thanks toBarton Springs Nurseryfor lending us the plants !

It was when we taped the Driftwood garden that my lovemaking affair with Dianella was seal . I ’d see it in a nursery calendar month before , but occupy about its survival gene . Scott render me the thumbs up with his Driftwood group that ’s been happy for seven year .

Here ’s one of the late additions in the crape bed with last yr ’s White Christmas caladium fromBrent and Becky ’s Bulbs , where you could also get Tom Peace’sFreesia laxa .

pavonia

I did n’t dig them up last fall , but by golly , a few are coming back , include one or two Florida Carnivals . Now is a great time to add caladiums to your shady beds . masses sometimes make the error of planting too soon , but it ’s better to wait until the stain has warm up in May .

If by Saturday night , you ’re pooped , and you enjoy Brit coms and closed book , decompress with Rosemary & Thyme at 8 p.m. on KLRU . ( Check your station ’s listings , since it ’s become a hit with everyone ) . Felicity Kendal and Pam Harris adept in this series for a fun inside look at British horticulture pose into a closed book . You ca n’t get a better storyline combination : horticulture , mystery , and Brit talk .

Also check out thisinspiring story from the NY Times , shared by a co-worker , about Wendy Johnson in California , one of the pioneers of the constitutive horticulture concept that form CTG ’s backbone .
