Easy Garden Obelisk – a great and inexpensive DIY! This obelisk can be used in your garden for roses, sweet peas or even squash. Some call these Tuteurs but they are the same.

There are so many thing you’re able to use this easy garden obelisk for .   I have even made anarbor from them for my Secret Gardenand last yr I used it as a tomato cage , it work out great ! Plus it was so much prettier than my conducting wire support cages .

Why do I call it slow ?

Because unlike many of the dagger plans I found online this one has no angle cut of meat yet look great in the garden . It gets covered with vines , canes , and other plants that slip the show and you do n’t really notice how the obelisk is build .

Do n’t have a power saw ? Many big box home improvement computer memory will hack the lumber for you .

Please see this post for a alternate material for hybridization pieces and a nailing or screw pattern to prevent ratcheting !

Important : Pre - exercise holes for screws . This will prevent splitting of the wood . Use a smear of forest glue at the junction of each firearm for added durability . Since this is an outside detail it should be an exterior wood mucilage .

Build first side of obelisk like a ladder

Start by building the first “ ladder” . Lay 2 of the 72″ pieces on a monotonous table or surface . We used the sharpness of our makeshift tabular array as a consecutive boundary .

Measure up 6″ from the bottom of both ramification ( 72″ pieces ) for arrangement of the bottom round or trave .

Since the legs are at an slant and the cross slice are bring down solid only line up the top quoin to the sharpness of the pegleg .

Next secure the top piece in placeStart ( 8 inch piece )

Check for square.

To check for foursquare you take measuring on the diagonal and adjust the pegleg until the measurements match as tight as possible .

This adjusting is called racking . This means you push on the corner that has the longer dimension ( if they do n’t jibe already ) by half the length .

Example : If one side is 1/2″ longer push the corner a 1/4″ then remeasure ( this is not an exact skill but it will bring the obelisk closer to square ) . Keep racking until dimension are equal or very close .

Evenly space rungs

Attach the residuum of the stave equally spacing them . ( you could space them unequally if you wished this is just how we did it )

To evenly space them measuring rod from the bottom of the dispirited stave to the top of the top rung .

split up that measurement by 4 to get placement of the rest of the rung .

This one the rungs need to be 16 1/4″ apart . cross off the spots to attach each rundle .

The measurements from the bottom rung is 16 1/4″ , 32 1/2″ , 48 3/4″

Now the first run should be built

The 2nd side or ladder is much truehearted to build since you use the first as a template .

Lay out the role on top of the first ramp up ravel and just put it together .

Lay the legs on top of the first run legs then attach the rung match the first ones and the 2nd ravel will be complete . ( you do not have to be exact )

Attach the side rungs of obelisk

Lay the ladder on their sides . Attach the side rungs abide by the layout of the rungs on the ravel pieces .

This is where you will see why the side rungs are 3 inch longer than the ladder rungs . They overlap the ends of the ladder rungs cover their ends .

Flip the intact thing over and tie the remain rung .

Finishing touches

On this particular dagger , the top is on the larger side . I want this so I could put something up there , even a potted works .

There are so many way you could summate a finishing touch here . observe or cut out a silhouette of your favorite farm animal , put a aerogenerator on it , or find a weather vane to attach .

you’re able to paint this any color you wish or defile it . I usedorganic tung oilon some of mine and it really helps them hold up for long time even though it is built out of cheaper Sir Henry Wood .

We built this one over 5 year ago and it is still in terrific frame .

When we built this the Mary Leontyne Price of the 2 x 2s at 8 feet recollective was $ 2.30 each and that was 5 years ago so I really do demand to incur out what they run now .

Lay 2 of the 72 in pieces on a flat table .

Measure up 6 inches from the bottom of both legs for placement of the bottom rung or crosspiece .

Easy DIY Garden Obelisk

Pre - recitation holes for screws . This will prevent splitting . secure the rung to the legs ( 24 inch piece ) .

Start with the top ( 8 inch spell ) and bottom rung to stabilize this segment .

Now confiscate your other mark piece or rundle . Measure from the bottom of the bottom rung and the top of the top rung . Divide that measurement by 4 to get placement for the round . Ours were 16 1/4 in apart . We marked the spots for each stave .

The positioning of the rungs   is from the bottom rung at 16 1/4 ” , 32 1/2 ” 48 3/4 ” Now you should have your first ravel build .

habituate the first one as a template . No measuring or picture for the second ladder .

Lay the ladders on their sides to confiscate the side rung .

This set of rundle are 3 inches longer than the ladder rungs , they will overlap the first set covering their ends .

recapitulate for the other side .

Paint or end up with a protective oil / filth .
