Today ’s photos are from Douglas Florey . He says,“My partner , David Lloyd , and I moved from an urban neighborhood in Pittsburgh to an acre lot in Rosslyn Farms , just outside the city limits , about 11 years ago .   When we moved in , the acre dwell of a huge chincapin oak tree , an American elmwood ( ! ) , two silverish maples , and a Indian bean , along with some lovely former gemstone walls .   The rest was a sea of weedy , parch lawn . A decade ( and untold amounts of sweat and dollars ) later , our base – Acorn Hill – is a very unlike , and very green , piazza !

Coming from the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh with a postage stamp - stamp sized backyard to a very private acre - sized garden was consuming , especially to two gardening tiro .   We had a landscape architect draw up a master plan during the fall and winter of our first yr , and began planting trees the spring after we moved in .   Although we ’ve slew and swerved from the original architectural plan , it was still the keystone papers that we used when laying out bottom and islands , as well as the irrigation system .

We now have well - established naughty and immature spruce , concolor , and fraser firs , white pine , long ton of native dogwood and Cercis canadensis , a number of Japanese maples , a half - dozen dissimilar genus Viburnum , a dawn redwood and a bald cypress , thousands of daffodil , and hundreds of peonies … Our goal for this summer is to constitute a number of different ground covers , so that our mulching needs each give are more accomplishable .

While there are things we would do differently now , we are really quite majestic of the positively charged changes to our home , especially considering that we plunk in without much precognition . ”

Douglas , it ’s so smart that you invested in woody works early on in the physical process . I did the opponent . I run half-baked with perennial when I bulge my garden and did n’t think about bush and trees until after . Now I have to wait even longer until they mature ! Your garden is so reposeful and serene . We definitely postulate more exposure this summer . Thanks for communion !

recollect , now ’s the gross time to take photos of your garden ! Email them to me at[email   protect ] .
