Destination Beauty: First Yard Makeover

Passionate about plants since puerility , Jared Goza and Andrew Ong plotted new paths of uncovering when they call on their first home ’s concrete slab railway yard into sensory destination . With eclectic style and indefatigable curiosity , they elevated dimension with trees , raised beds and privacy trellises . “Some people focus on a specific thing in their garden , and I remember ours is a little eclectic , but that ’s how we like it , ” Jared enjoin . In 2019 , they launchedGays Who Gardenon Instagram to share their journeying and help new gardeners . “Great potential drop ” is how the sales itemisation could have described the pace that came with their star sign . When they bought the cottage in 2017 , both front and backyards were mostly plow in concrete slabs . After give over a chunk of alteration to demolish and haul them away , they plotted a break down granite path around a key island anchor by a Shumard oak tree . When they started planting , they focused on tree diagram and orotund shrubs first . They take on they made a few errors , but do n’t we all when it fall to trees ? Fortunately , they spot the problem early on and simply go things around . In a shady corner near the house , they planted an elderberry tree and oakleaf hydrangea where it ’s easy to give them additional urine when needed . Rusty blackhaw viburnum , wood fern , and other part shade - lovers level foliar texture and seasonal color . “Any prison term we were putting out the way of life and planning out where thing were get to be , we wanted there to be a reasonableness for those things . It does n’t just have to be like because it ’s pretty . It could be because this area gets more shade so this can be kind of a woodland area , ” Jared explains . “It ’s a position where I can escape , to be quite honest . It ’s a place where I follow home to where I know I ’m not being judged . I ’m not . I get it on I ’m not being watch . I know that I can come here and let my creative juices flow , ” Andrew state . They do n’t habituate weedkiller , not even when ridding the remnants of weedy yard back in the beginning . squat down and pulling out unwanted seedlings aligns better with their philosophy to give back , not take away from natural resources . Andrew relies on a stirrup hoe to clear undesirable seedlings from the path . Although Andrew and Jared each prefer particular plant , they share quenchless oddment about them all . Native plants like dark - eyed Susan cosy up to bearded iris and bluebonnets . Native perennial Mexican lid . On an Excel spreadsheet , Andrew laid out his seeding schedule . He starts most of them in potentiometer , admit cool weather yearly foxgloves . One side of the island bed clusters native perennials for successional flowering . Coneflower and low - growing snake in the grass herbaceous plant feed pollinators previous leap and in early fall . Feathery genus Liatris claims the purplish - lavender show in late fall . In this pollinator oasis , where a Red Admiral butterfly stroke stop by delphinium — a cool weather one-year — you wo n’t find any pesticides among the garden supplies . But to protect their yummy smasher from one - bite squirrels , they do net their tree . Since they ’re out in the garden every day , they can keep an eye out for any chick or serpent that get immobilize in the veiling — which has n’t been a job for them . Andrew loves roses , including fragrant David Austin English mixed bag , for cut flower arrangement . When crowd of Kern ’s flower scarabaeus threatened to destroy the flush , he steal fruit bags over each one . They love British garden and horticulture shows , and in fact , spent their honeymoon in the UK . A mutual theme ( as in Central Texas gardens ) is a water feature . Jared wanted their pool to evoke an previous country well , so he choose pool ocean liner rather than a preformed Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe . He build up the side of meat with broken up flagstone left over from the path . Like all the water plant life , ‘ Black Princess ’ piss lily domicile in a black plastic flock , mask by bits of stone on top . When Andrew first build their raise beds , the idea was to grow vegetables . finally , they decide to consecrate the space to roses and other flowered fellow traveler while add vertical property to the garden . Shade material softens late spring ’s rough light , specially welcome as summer ramps up the high temperature . Trellises upgrade the view , too . Andrew and Jared weave cotton fiber twine onto flesh that Andrew builds from scrap lumber . In a narrow-minded side yard , they considered option for its use , reconcile on another raised seam . In this one , twine will support young cosmos peak as they maturate up . They apply the drawing string proficiency around other marvelous flowering plants to keep them upright . At the ending , they instal a chicken coop . When we visited in mid - May , the chicks were still in the mansion , but they ’ve now graduate to their big hen abode and adjoining chicken run . They turned the awkward narrow infinite between the family and garage into a cozy deck where they can nurture container plants that like brilliant shade . Since the drive takes up a lot of real demesne , they put it to use . They adorn the fence with Belinda ’s Dream and Old Blush roses while native coral honeysuckle rambles over a trellis . Another treillage support purple hyacinth bean vine , a lovely summertime - to - fall favorite for bees and butterflies . They add a little more screening with a trellis supporting thunbergia , black - eyed Susan vine . Andrew build raised bottom to illustrate that anyone can garden , even if they do n’t have a 1000 . “I am happy when I am generative , so why not hook up with that with something I love , which is garden , ” Andrew says . Jared tote up , “ I want to play the beauty that I see in nature into our own property . I desire it to be a destination and a position that I can in reality enjoy . ”When the garden prospers , Andrew notes , “ It make me sense like it ’s kind of like Mother Nature smiling . Thank you for give care . ”Watch their floor now !
