Gardening

Border Patrol is my monthly spell of the borders in my garden , the idea being to take an overview , see what ’s working well , what require to convert , that variety of thing .

The Patio Border – I ’ve go some Allium from their previous straight lines into more natural thud . Some of them are protest about this by bet a bit distressed . They may not flower brilliantly well this year , perhaps I should have waited until they were done . I ’ve add lupine and penstemons this calendar month which should all replete out the domain just behind the berberis ‘ lucky rocket ’ . I ’ve recently sire clench of a load of gladioli corm , some of which will have a starring part in this border . There is still a sightly bit of bare ground here which can accommodate the seedlings I have growing on . I am much happier with this border than I was just a few months ago .

The gay Border – The cotinus is still looking shorn , but fear not , new growth is appear now . More of the fence is pass over by rosebush and clematis foliage . No flowers yet , but they are coming . I have some annual climbers in the greenhouse which will further decorate the fenceline – some thunbergia alata and mina lobata . I might indulge in a tardy sowing of sweet-smelling pea too since my independent batch is looking very ropy . I ’ve got a small superfluous front - quarrel planting space which I need to fill , plus there will be spaces vacated by bulb foliage once it dies down . I have plenty of macrocosm and tagetes to go in here , plus more of those gladiolus . The dahlia which I get out in the undercoat are poking through now , they will soon develop on to satisfy out the wall area .

The Wisteria Border ( incorporating Eye of Sauron ) . The titular wisteria is not quite at meridian fab but is certainly getting its beaming shred on . It is get down to feel quite lush now , sitting in the Eye . There is not a lot of unornamented existent estate . Since last prison term I have move some poppy seedlings about , they should fulfill out over the next few weeks . I ’m please to see the eleagnus ‘ atomic number 80 ’ leafing out and growing upwards too . That will eventually get quite gravid but can be pruned and mould to become . Also doing well is a hydrangea ‘ annabel ’ which I grew from a cutting a couplet of year ago . I have some lupin I ’d like to squash in here , but they are too small at the second , they ’d get swamped . I might end up sustain them in tumid pots this yr and just place them in the margin when flowering , plonking them on top of the tulip , for example . I ’d still like to have the wisteria execute lower down ( as it were ) but I revere the pruning that would be necessary to achieve that . In the mean time I necessitate the roses and clematis to cover her modesty . I can also raise some of those yearly climber up here . Still very proud of with this corner of the garden , I ’m impatient to see it get over the next two or three months .

The Lilac Border – I think there ’s room for some annual climber here too . There look like a heap of bare ground but that ’s mainly vernal plant not yet fulfill out . inactive bulbs will give me the chance to park something on top of them , I have slew of option .

Shady Border – Having removed the abelia ( safely relocated to the front garden , for the touch among you ) I have quite a bit of place , I think for foxgloves since they do n’t beware a mo of shade . I ’ve also crammed in some more geranium and hosta into this mete . Once the shrubs get going again it will feel less roomy , I think . babble of shrubs , I have half a creative thinker to grow some clematis montana along the 4′ fence at the back of the border . At this time of year the fence is quite visible behind the stark bush , I recall the blossom would be quite flashy there . I have a couple of cuttings taken last year , I may embed those later in the year when they ’ve put some comme il faut roots on , and I can always take more cuttings now that the parent plants have established .

The Hibiscus Border – I ’ve hail off the fence and named it . The hibiscus does have an pesky substance abuse of being a very slow starter but it should be very courteous when in its pomp . I ’m in wait - and - see manner with this edge . I ’ll wait until the incumbent plants fulfil out and prime before deciding what else could be done in here .

For the rearward garden finalé here is the purview look up the sunnier side of the garden .

Side Alley – The climbers on the sunnier side are doing very nicely , particularly the montana / meeting house combo which is very lush at the moment . Flowers are just in grounds , should be even better in a duet of week . I have planted geranium ‘ bevan ’s variety ’ and hostas in the previously empty suspicious planter , they seem happy enough and the geranium will shortly be flowering .

Front Garden

The Fence Border – well , that is presently the prevailing feature ! I have plant two scraggy looking roses that I ’m not certain I like , and plan to plant a couple more and some clematis too . In the brusk term some of those yearly social climber can go in here . It all look a bit bare at the import so I ’ll spare its rosiness .

The Keyhole Border – the region inside the new track line search vaguely keyhole shape . I effectively encircle some plant that were already in this area , plus I ’ve added some others . Poppies , geraniums , genus Hypericum and a foxtail lily spring to heed . Most are small at the consequence so I ’m not expecting too much from them this year . I ’ll add a couple of dahlias into the middle of this space , plus I have gladioli and a cluster of other plants in the glasshouse that I can squelch in here .

The Window Border – there were three pheasant ’s tail grasses here in a big and haughty clump . I ditched one and moved another to the far recession , leaving one in station . With a morsel of support in place for the sens this will provide more planting space .

The Hypericum Border – not a whole muckle has changed here , except the abelia grandiflora which I put in . Oh , and a fuchsia , a reject from the back garden , plus some more geranium , penstemon , credibly a few more things I ’ve forgotten about .
