I get it on the holiday but I really just lionize Christmas ( the commercial vacation ) for my kids . For myself , I lionize winter with a simmer pot of citrous fruit and spiciness on the Grant Wood kitchen stove , ruminate wine , bottomless stew , alllll the lights , and alllll the verdure . The more , the alert !

evergreen plant garland , garlands , loot , and centerpiece are harbingers of the most wonderful sentence of year , and few things feel more festal than your home smell like a woods . ( It ’s like timberland washup , but you do n’t even have to leave your house . ) When it comes to holiday verdure , nothing really compares to the real thing — but like all exist thing , keeping your wreath fresh and vivacious can be tricky .

Many wreath turn brown prematurely because they dry out untimely — but you could slacken the process and keep your wreath green long past the holidays . My own wreaths and garlands stay fresh for about eight weeks with no acerate leaf drop !

This is what I do every year to help my garland keep snuff it after the New Year :

Buy the freshest wreath available

To ensure your wreath does n’t ferment browned too speedily , you have to start with the fresh wreath you may come up . If it feels fairly light , the needle look pale , and the wreath seems dry , opportunity are , it ’s already a few hebdomad old and wo n’t last much longer in your base .

Give it a good shiver . If the wreath or garland spill alotof needles , take a passing because you likely wo n’t be capable to convey it back to life .

Give it a snuff . Does it smell like you ’re walk through a forest ? lei made of pine , firs , cedar tree , or spruces should all smell like a freshly - cut Christmas Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree .

Soak your greenery in water overnight

Most people bound off this whole step , and it ’s one of the most important ! As soon as you convey your greenery home , intoxicate it in piss overnight ( or at least for a few hour ) . Ideally , all of the needles should be overwhelm so they can rehydrate . If there ’s a rainstorm passing through , you may also result your wreaths outside and let them drink it up .

Just do n’t pawn them in your nice white bathtub — live evergreens with sap can sometimes maculate . alternatively , fill up a enceinte bin or an one-time kiddie puddle , or expend your rain barrels if you want to conserve water .

I hock my wreaths and garland in the utility program sink in our service department because , well , that ’s the sort of mussy job it ’s intend for ! I pile them all into the sink , spray them down , make full the tub , and allow for them deluge for at least 8 hour . ( This also help to take away any tiny pest that may have hitch on the stems . )

If you have an evergreen centerpiece , treat it like a houseplant and give it a shower in the swallow hole . Mine are usually coiffure in floral froth , so I fill up the vessel with water for the foam to absorb .

Once your coronal and garlands have soaked overnight , move them onto towel ( or in my case , an old moving blanket ) and let them drip dry before you decorate .

Protect your wreaths and garlands from the elements

If you have n’t decided where to hang your wreaths and garlands , the respectable place to put them is outdoors , away from verbatim sunlight and high winds . They much prefer the nerveless air outdoors ( versus a heated base with warm , dry gentle wind ) and will last the longest if they ’re hung under a covered porch .

But if you have your heart set on get your verdure indoors , hang them out of direct sun and off from fireplaces , heating plant vents , or radiator . They wo n’t dry out as fast if kept in the coolest part of your house , and at nighttime , it ’s best to dial down the thermoregulator ( which willhelp your Christmas tree last longer too ) .

A fresh chaplet can stay put plushy and fleeceable for up to eight week outside , but it might only make it a couple of workweek if it ’s placed in full Lord’s Day or inside a very tender place .

Water your wreath regularly

Evergreen needle are able to absorb wet through microscopic openings called stomata — stomate , essentially . Since they ’re still living plant , chaplet and garlands need regular water to retain their needles and last out light-green . Watering also help bring out their woody fragrance again !
